Takopii no Genzai

A squid-like creature, known as a Happian, leaves his home planet with the desire to spread happiness across the universe. He lands on Earth, but quickly finds himself in danger of captivity by its inhabitants. Fortunately, he is found by an unsmiling little girl named Shizuka Kuze, who feeds him and names him Takopii. Feeling indebted, Takopii decides to do everything in his power to bring a smile to her face.

The task is easier said than done, however. Shizuka is bullied by her classmates, she does not have a father, and her mother is never home—though the gravity of these issues flies over the naive Takopii's head. Even so, Shizuka does have one source of happiness: her dog Chappy. The connection Shizuka and Chappy share only increases Takopii's desire to make the girl smile.

While Takopii's attempts to lift Shizuka's spirits lead to unintended consequences, he is determined to take things into his own tentacles, test his understanding of human beings, and achieve his goal of spreading happiness.

NEVER, and I mean NEVER base your decision to watch an anime from the opening. 💀

I went into Takopi's Original Sin expecting a cute coming-of-age enemies-to-lovers show with a talking octopus. Instead I was met with a suicide warning followed by 40 minutes of one of the greatest, most mentally and emotionally challenging episodes of anime I've seen in my life.

Takopi's Original Sin (タコピーの原罪) is an anime based on the 2-volume manga series of the same name by Taizan S. It follows Takopi, an octopus-like alien known as a "Happian" who makes it his goal to bring happiness to the troublesome life of fourth-grader Shizuka. ... As the story continues, Takopi uncovers new truths about life on Earth, discovering concepts of loss, depression, and death. Even though rain and sun, Takopi makes it his goal to see Shizuka smile in her life. Will he be able to do it? Or will it all fall apart somewhere along the line?

In all honesty, I was going to write a "pros and cons" section for this anime but I don't even know if I can, given that there are hardly any weak points to this anime so far. The only critiques I can think of are some odd music choices during some of the most serious moments of this anime, although this is likely done to represent Takopi's confused reactions to said events, and the somewhat formulaic approach of "everyone suffers, but you don't see it" that is used for every character in this series. Still, even that has a reason for being here. Overall, Takopi's Original Sin is just great across the board. Beautiful, cinematic animation and artwork, great voice acting, well-written characters and dialogue, stellar sound design, everything is there.

That being said, this anime isn't for everyone. The show is very hard to digest, especially if you are emotionally prone or have experienced hard times yourself.

Even so, I greatly recommend watching the first episode at the very least, as Takopi's Original Sin is truly one of the greatest anime experiences I have ever witnessed in my life. 3 episodes in, I'm giving it a 10/10, but we'll see how the rest of the story goes.

Well after watching the opening, I feel baited. I want an anime opening that TRULY represents the anime. Hmm, maybe I'll pick up Death Parade? 🤔

Idk how to start without using holy shit

Like bro this show make u struggle to understand and feel at the same time like hiting u with a pan in the head than put a bandage on it its so different and realistic at the same time, the contradiction between takupi and the mc is so fucked up that takupi needed to experience the thing to understand it.
And u can feel every inch of the show and don't know what to feel and when to feel.
One time u sympathy with thec then u just say she need to help her self more then u sympathy again ... and the timing of the events is so good can give u mental breakdown, and the idia of the time travil can make u understand how human are simple when more advanced creatures are there but they are not advanced in the same time.

Takopii no Genzai is one of those stories that tries too hard to be deep but ends up feeling empty. It shares the same frustrating foundation as Re:Zero, a clueless protagonist with an unrealistic goal, like “making Shizuka happy” no matter what. Much like Subaru, Takopii has the power to reset or retry, but still manages to make the dumbest decisions over and over again.

Despite having god tier tools, Takopii learns absolutely nothing about human emotions or relationships. Even after going through pain and even death, he still believes Marina and Shizuka can patch things up. The lack of growth is mind-numbing.

The story jumps into ... heavy topics almost immediately, trying to mimic something like Goodnight Punpun’s emotional weight without earning it. It feels like the author wanted shock value more than meaningful storytelling. The scene where Shizuka breaks down after Marina’s death could’ve been powerful, but it ends up exposing how weak and dependent she really is.

In the end, it’s like Doraemon gone wrong, a magical friend helping to cover up murder and glorifying it in the process. Takopii no Genzai had potential but wasted it on melodrama, poor character logic and forced tragedy.
