Tokyo Ghoul:re

Two years have passed since the CCG's raid on Anteiku. Although the atmosphere in Tokyo has changed drastically due to the increased influence of the CCG, ghouls continue to pose a problem as they have begun taking caution, especially the terrorist organization Aogiri Tree, who acknowledge the CCG's growing threat to their existence.

The creation of a special team, known as the Quinx Squad, may provide the CCG with the push they need to exterminate Tokyo's unwanted residents. As humans who have undergone surgery in order to make use of the special abilities of ghouls, they participate in operations to eradicate the dangerous creatures. The leader of this group, Haise Sasaki, is a half-ghoul, half-human who has been trained by famed special class investigator, Kishou Arima. However, there's more to this young man than meets the eye, as unknown memories claw at his mind, slowly reminding him of the person he used to be.

Tokyo Ghoul:re throws you headfirst into a colder, more fractured world—one where the lines between human and ghoul are more blurred than ever, and the pain of what’s been lost echoes through every episode. It’s messier than the previous seasons, but also more ambitious. For fans invested in Kaneki’s story, it hits hard and rewards your patience.

The pacing is fast—sometimes too fast—but there’s no denying the emotional weight behind the chaos. The new characters, especially the Quinx Squad, bring a fresh perspective while still tying back to the core themes of identity, trauma, and belonging. Watching Kaneki (as Haise) struggle with a peace he doesn’t ... fully understand is heartbreaking and fascinating at the same time.

Visually, the tone is colder and more clinical, which fits the more tactical, CCG-centered direction. There are moments where the animation falters under the complexity of the story, but key scenes still land with force. The soundtrack remains haunting, and while nothing quite tops Unravel, Asphyxia sets the perfect mood for this new chapter.

It’s not a perfect season—plot threads can feel rushed, and the sheer number of characters might be overwhelming—but the emotional stakes are higher than ever. If you stick with it, Tokyo Ghoul:re offers some of the most raw, tragic, and powerful moments in the series. It’s Kaneki’s story at its most broken—and most human.

Mixed Feelings

Tokyo Ghoul:re is where things start to get really complicated—and not always in a good way. Moving further away from the manga, the anime tries to create its own original plotlines, but this results in a confusing and often messy narrative.

While the animation quality remains decent and some character moments still shine, the overall story suffers from pacing issues, unclear motivations, and plot inconsistencies. For fans of the manga, it can feel frustrating to see the story veer off course so drastically.

Despite its flaws, Tokyo Ghoul:re still has some compelling scenes and maintains the dark, gritty atmosphere the series is known for, but it ultimately ... doesn’t live up to the standards set by earlier seasons.

A 7/10 from me.

Tokyo Ghoul (and RE) does not have an anime adaptation.
This is all you need to know basically. I watched this after having read RE (which doesn't have the easiest story to follow) and was still getting confused but the insane pacing or outright chapter skips this """adaptation""" has.
If you thought the first 2 tokyo ghoul adaptations were bad then boy you're gonna have a bad experience with this one...
Lets see:
The story's interweaved subplots, ruined because pacing, check.
Any form of character development expected from a seinen, reduced to shonen tier, check.
Animation as basic as it gets, check.
Just read the manga, please...
